Principles of Music Composing XXIII: National versus Global

Delighted to share the publication of my most recent paper “Cultural Elements of Crete in Contemporary Composition” at the “Principles of Music Composing XXIII: National versus Global” academic journal in Vilnius, Lithuania. You can access it here: https://xn--urnalai-cxb.lmta.lt/en/issue/principles-of-music-composing-xxiii-national-versus-global/?

The paper, presented at the 23rd International
Conference “Principles of Music Composing” in Vilnius, explores the influence of traditional idioms of Crete on contemporary composition, through a case study focusing on three solo works of mine:

1) Lux Perpetua for Solo Flute (2005) – 3rd Prize at Volos Composition Competition in 2008 (premiered in 2005 at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and re-performed at the “100 days of new music” project by Robin Meiksins in Chicago, 2020)

2) Lament for Theodore Antoniou for Bass Flute (2020), published by Universal Edition/Scodo and released by Phasma Music, performed by Iwona Glinka, receiving the Academia Music Awards ”Best Album-Classical” prize for the full album.

3) Cretan Dance for Piano (2023), premiered by Elena Perisynaki in January 2024 at the Πολιτιστικό Συνεδριακό Κέντρο Ηρακλείου – Cultural Conference Center Crete (soon to be released by Phasma music)

Congratulations to all authors and many thanks to the academic team of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre for their support of the full publication.

Black Velvet Sky (2024) for Chamber Ensemble

Very happy to share a midi realisation of my most recent composition “Black Velvet Sky” for chamber ensemble (2024). The title has been quoted from an interview with the former astronaut Edwin Eugene (Buzz) Aldrin, who described the view of Earth from space as such. The work features the interaction between short rhythmic and melodic motifs, which “float” within a uniform, ever moving macro-structure.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!
